Christian Poems Through the Ages

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Famous writers have written poems about Christian themes, even though this theme may not always be evident from the title. William Butler Yeats, for example, wrote the poems “A Prayer for my Daughter” and “A Prayer for my Son”. Charles Dickens wrote “A Child’s Hymn” which is poetry for the Christmas season.

Christian poems have always been popular. They have been set to music and sung in churches and at various occasions. “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” is one example of a song that has lasted for centuries. All of the beloved Christmas carols we love to sing and listen to are examples of this form of poetry.

John Donne, William Blake and John Milton are other famous poets who have expressed their religious beliefs in the form of a poem. These poems are a legacy left behind to remind us of the power of prayer and that there are many ways to pray.
